Every registered domain name has no less than two Name Server records which show where it's hosted i.e. by using these records you point your domain to the servers of a certain website hosting company. In this way, you have got both your site and your emails managed by the same service provider. On the lower level of the Domain Name System (DNS), nevertheless, there are lots of other records, for instance A and MX. The first one reveals which server manages the website for a given domain and is always an IP address (123.123.123.123), while the second one reveals which server manages the emails and is always an alphanumeric string (mx1.domain.com). As an example, whenever you type a domain in your web browser, your request is forwarded through the global DNS system to the company whose NS records the domain name uses and from there you could be forwarded to the servers of a different service provider if you have set an IP address of the latter as an A record for your domain address. Having independent records for the website and the e-mails suggests that you may have your website and your emails with 2 different providers if you wish.
Custom MX and A Records in Website Hosting
If you have a website hosting account through our company and you would like to move either your site or your e-mails to another company, it will take you literally simply 2 clicks to do this. Our Hepsia CP comes with an easy-to-use DNS Records tool, where all your domain names and subdomains will be listed alphabetically and you will be able to see and edit the A and/or MX records for any of them. If you choose to use a different e-mail provider and they ask you to set up more MX records than the default two, it's not going to take more than a couple of clicks either to add them. Also you can set different latency for these records and the lower the latency, the greater the priority a particular MX record is going to have. The propagation of each record that you change or create isn't going to take more than a few hours and if required, you'll also be able to set the so-called Time-To-Live value, that shows how long a record will remain active after it's modified or deleted.
